Charles Bynum, MPH, ASP, RBP (ABSA), is an Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) professional with more than 12 years of experience supporting organizations that manage complex biological, chemical, and radiological hazards. He has worked with a variety of institutions, including R1 research universities and private academic medical institutions, where he has helped develop, enhance, and sustain comprehensive safety and compliance programs.
As the Director of Environmental Health and Safety for a multi‑institution university system, including a medical school, Charles serves as the organization’s technical authority for biosafety, radiation safety, chemical safety, and occupational health. His work spans research, clinical, and instructional settings, with a strong focus on translating complex regulatory requirements into practical, risk‑based solutions that support institutional goals.
Throughout his career, Charles has represented institutions before federal and state regulatory agencies, including OSHA, EPA, NRC, and DOT, as well as accreditation bodies such as AAALAC and The Joint Commission, and public health agencies like the NIH, CDC, and USDA. He has extensive experience advising executive leadership, managing audits and corrective action programs, and overseeing high-risk operations, including BSL‑3 laboratories and gamma irradiator facilities.
Charles holds a Master of Public Health from the University of Nevada, Reno, and a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He is credentialed as an Associate Safety Professional (ASP) through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) and as a Registered Biosafety Professional (RBP) through ABSA International. He also serves as a Radiation Safety Officer in the State of Georgia, providing regulatory oversight and technical leadership for licensed radioactive materials programs in research and academic settings.
